When she was sure that they were alone and that they wouldn’t be overheard, Sydney let go of Zabe’s arm. “So tell me,” she demanded, her hands on her hips. “What are you really doing here?”

The muscles in Zabe’s jaw twitched as she clenched her back teeth. “Why are you marrying that guy?”

Sydney narrowed her eyes at Zabe. “Because he’s a good guy.”

“A good guy? What’s that supposed to mean?” Zabe demanded. “Has he been a ‘good guy’ every time he’s fucked up your date nights and you come crawling to me for attention?”

Zabe inwardly cringed at her caustic words. She didn’t want to be verbally attacking Sydney like this. She didn’t want to see her so hurt. But her natural reaction was to lash back at the woman who could so easily, and seemingly effortlessly, disregard all that had developed between them to marry some jerk.

“I don’t come crawling to you,” Sydney snapped angrily. “You just happen to always be there.”

“Well I haven’t had any complaints from you yet,” Zabe seethed angrily.

“Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t marry Preston,” Sydney retorted. “Can you promise me a future?” she challenged. “Can you promise me anything?”

“You don’t need a man,” Zabe pointed out. “It’s not the 1950s or something. You’ve got a killer job that you earned all on your own.”

Sydney shook her head animatedly. “It’s not about the money or the job or the things I can buy. You know that,” she protested.

“Keep telling yourself that, cutie,” Zabe leered. “Cause from where I’m standing, I don’t see any other reason for you to be rushing into a marriage.”

“I want to get married,” Sydney snapped defensively. “I want to be in love, and I want someone to love me back.”

Zabe threw her hands up in the air in disgust and frustration. “Are you so fixated on living a fairy tale that you’re willing to throw your life away to marry a man you don’t even love?”

Sydney bristled at the harsh words. “You don’t know that,” she cried. “You don’t know how I feel about Preston.”

“Maybe not,” Zabe admitted. “But I know how you feel about me.”

Sydney’s green eyes flashed with defiance. “Oh really? And what’s that? Repulsion? Pity? Scorn?”

“No,” Zabe growled, her deep voice thick and sticking on the syllables. “You might think you hate me, Sydney. But that’s only because you’re afraid of what we could have.” She clutched onto Sydney’s hand and pressed it against her breastplate, over her heart. “You pushed me away, right from the beginning,” she seethed darkly. “You weren’t able to deal with what was happening between us in college, and you hate me because instead of feeling sorry for myself, I thrive.” Zabe shook her head bitterly. “No…you don’t hate me, Syd. I know that.” Her eyes flashed as she glowered. “You love me like you love the air you breathe.”

Sydney’s breath hitched in her throat. The combination of Zabe’s closeness, her words, and the heat radiating from her chest was making her head spin.
